The Princeville provided us with fantastic rates even though the wedding is during its high season. Consider making reservations as far in advance as possible since rooms go quickly. We recommend getting to Kauai on Thurs., so you don't have to rely on Friday flight schedules and miss the luau.
In order to receive the wedding discount, you need to make reservations directly with the hotel (5-6 hrs. behind EST): 1-800-826-1260 & ask for IN-HOUSE RESERVATIONS. Please let the hotel reservations desk know you are with the Wyatt/Peckham wedding.
The rate is good for Friday & Saturday, as well as the four preceding & following nights – for those who want to see & do everything on Kauai! If you would like to stay extra days, have special requests, or have difficulty making reservations, please ask for Courtney at the Princeville.
If you are traveling with children, rooms on the 3rd & 4th floors are close to the beach, but high enough to avoid morning pool noise. If you are traveling with people who have limited mobility, we recommend floors 5-7 – these are convenient to both the pool and lobby, and have great views. Floors 8-11 have dynamite views, but require a little more effort to get to the beach.
The Princeville is part of the Starwood Luxury Collection (www.spg.com). All rooms have robes and slippers, as well as a safe, mini-bar, laundry/dry cleaning avail., room service, tv, phone, game unit, etc. They typically use Aveda amenities (Rosemary-Mint), so even NYC gals can save room in their vanity kits. Bathrooms include double marble sinks, a tub for 2, and a "privacy window" – you can set the window to "clear" to see the ocean while you shower, and then set it to "opaque" for a little more privacy.
Perks of staying at the hotel:
If you aren't a Starwood Preferred member (St. Regis, Westin, W, Sheraton, Luxury Collection), you should sign up – it's free, and the hotel provides members with some nice perks, including a special concierge, who will pre-book your dinner reservations, activities and tee times. Be sure to give your Starwood number when you make reservations.
If you are a Starwood Gold member or have an AmEx Platinum Card (one of the card's benefits is automatic Starwood Gold status – call AmEx to set it up), the resort gives space-available upgrades to Gold members, and on our recent visit, we were upgraded to an incredible two-story suite!
The hotel has waived the resort & fitness center fees for our guests. The prices are subject to state room tax. The rates are for two adults – children stay free.
THE SOUTH SIDE OF KAUAI:
Although it is a hike from the Princeville, you might want to consider the Kauai Hyatt Regency on the south side of the island if you have children. The weather traditionally is better, and the Hyatt has an amazing lagoon & pool, which provide children (& parents) with endless hours of entertainment. Check out the Hyatt's packages (B&B, AAA, AARP, and military) – rack rates are pretty high.
THE NORTH SIDE – THE PRINCEVILLE/HANALEI AREA:
Both Regency & Ocean Front Realty offer condos in the Princeville/Hanalei area. If you are traveling with a large family, this is a good option to consider. Both offer daily and weekly rates. Some of these properties do not have pools, but most have beach access, and you can get detailed information (including pictures of the actual villa or condo) on the web sites. We've included descriptions (from web sites, realtors, and guidebooks).
Note that the realtors usually charge a "processing fee" of approx. $35, and "cleaning fees" - some can get pretty steep, so be sure to ask about them when you make your reservation. If you are interested in any of the following properties, Regency and Oceanfront were recommended (Regency a little more often).
Hanalei Bay Resort is on a bluff above the Princeville. It has ocean, mountain and golf course views, 2 swimming pools, one with a waterfall & sand beach, tennis, restaurant, some suites have washer/dryers (ask). These vary in quality because they are condos, but the property looks nice & good for kids. 1-3 BR units ranging from $150-400.
Pali Ke Kua is on a bluff overlooking the coastline. Swimming pool, whirlpool, trail down to beach, restaurant. Many units have great views. Try to get an upstairs unit and avoid units 5-16. 1-3 BR units begin at $100.
Puu Poa is near a bluff within walking distance of the Princeville. Higher floor units have great views. Units vary in quality. Bathrooms have round Japanese tub and shower. Rates begin at $150.
Hanalei Bay Villas (not the same as Hanalei Bay Resort) are individual houses on stilts built across the street from Puu Poa. They are in walking distance to the Princeville, and have kitchens and living/dining room areas. Good mountain views but no real ocean views. Rates begin at $150 for 2-3br/2-3bath units.
The Cliffs is about 3/4 mile from the Princeville, and is near the edge of a bluff facing east and has a large grassy area. It has a small pool, whirlpool, and tennis. Units beginning with 8&9 have the best views. There is a range of units (up to 4br), and prices begin at about $175.
The Sea Lodge is good value with nice ocean reef views.
